Quality of Life

At Alliance, we know that our employees and their families are important parts of the communities in which they live and work. By helping our employees stay healthy and safe, we also ensure that they are ready to play critical roles in their families and communities.

On-Site Medical Facilities

We also know that our employees and their families lead busy lives and that work and family obligations can sometimes make it challenging to seek medical treatment, especially when there can be delays in scheduling appointments or long waits in doctors' offices.  Making medical treatment easier and more accessible is one of the many reasons we are excited to offer on-site medical services to all of our employees and their families.

What began as a mobile clinic traveling between operations has now transformed into fully furnished physician's offices at all of our mining operations, as well as at our offices in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Lexington, Kentucky.  At any time, an employee or a family member can stop by the Lexington office of our Medical Director, Dr. Raymond Wells, the Tulsa office of Dr. Boerje Axelsson, or one of our Nurse Practitioners or Registered Nurses at any of our operations, without incurring a co-pay or co-insurance of any kind!  At right, Dr. Wells consults with Rose Thompson, Executive Secretary, in his Lexington office.
In  addition, Dr. Wells and his staff have embraced telemedicine technology at each site that allows Dr. Wells to see and speak with patients and staff remotely.

The Raymond D Wells PSC, Alliance's on-site medical provider, continues to develop relationships with regional and national centers of excellence to obtain world-class care for the employees of Alliance Coal and its affiliates.

Health Fairs

What you don't know CAN hurt you.  That's why regular check-ups are vital to ensuring the well-being of our employees. Each year we hold health fairs at every operation and support office to raise awareness about a healthy lifestyle.

During the health fairs, a series of simple diagnostic tests are completed that inform an individual about his or her risk for the "Killer Five":  high cholesterol; high blood sugar; high blood pressure; tobacco-related illness; and unhealthy body weight.  After the confidential screenings, a member of the medical staff "coaches" the individual on ways to reduce these risk factors.  Follow-ups and informational packets are also a part of the comprehensive care we are proud to provide to our employees and their families.

These yearly events enable the medical staff to ensure that each of our employees is Built to Last.  Click here for more information about the Built to Last program and other services offered by Dr. Wells and his staff.
